Tyson Fury has retired from boxing
Tyson Fury has officially announced his retirement from boxing, just weeks after his rematch defeat to Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk. The announcement marks the end of a remarkable career for one of boxing’s most iconic fighters.
The Announcement
Fury shared the news on Instagram with a short video and the caption: “Thanks, it’s been a blast. Thanks to everyone who helped out along the way! Happy New Year. Jesus is King now & forever.”
In the video, Fury said: “Hi everybody. I’m gonna make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it, and I’m gonna end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody. See you on the other side. Get up.”
The retirement comes after his second consecutive loss to Usyk, marking the only two defeats in Fury’s career.
A History of Retirements
This is not the first time Fury has stepped away from the sport. Prior to his 2022 fight against Dillian Whyte, Fury claimed he would retire, stating: “I’m a two-time undisputed world champion. £150 million in the bank and nothing to prove to anybody.”
Following his victory against Whyte, Fury doubled down on his plans to retire, saying: “I fulfilled everything I’ve ever wanted to fulfil. I will retire as only the second heavyweight in history, after Rocky Marciano, to retire undefeated. I was unbeatable at this game.”
However, Fury returned to the ring soon after, taking on Derek Chisora in a highly anticipated bout.
Reflections on His Career
Fury’s duology with Oleksandr Usyk has become one of the most talked-about rivalries in recent boxing history. Both fights were hotly contested, but Usyk emerged victorious in both, with the most recent decision scored 116-112 by all three judges.
Following his loss, Fury was critical of the judging, stating: “I felt a little Christmas spirit in there, and I think he got a little Christmas gift from them judges. An early Christmas gift. I was confident I had won that fight again. I’ll always believe until the day I die that I won that fight.”
Despite his frustrations, Fury acknowledged the unpredictable nature of boxing. “When you don’t get the knockout, this is what happens. You can’t guarantee the win.”
Family Sacrifices
Fury’s preparations for his rematch with Usyk saw him sacrifice time with his wife Paris and their seven children. Speaking before the fight, Fury revealed he had not seen his family for three months, dedicating himself entirely to his training camp.
After the fight, Fury expressed his desire to take a break from the sport and spend time with his family. “I’m going home and having some time off. For sure. I’m going to go home and have a good Christmas,” he said.
What’s Next for Tyson Fury?
Fury’s retirement signals the end of an illustrious boxing career. While fans may remain skeptical of his decision given his history of returning to the ring, this announcement feels more definitive given his back-to-back losses and apparent desire to focus on his personal life.
Regardless of whether he stays retired, Fury’s impact on the sport is undeniable. With his charisma, resilience, and skill, he has cemented his place as one of the greatest heavyweights in boxing history. As the boxing world moves forward, Fury’s legacy will undoubtedly remain a benchmark for future champions.
