Shortly after the release of Squid Game season two, fans might have just caught a glimpse of the potential release date for the third and final season—though Netflix quickly deleted the evidence.
Netflix Korea reportedly uploaded a video revealing the release date for the finale of the popular series. The video, however, has since been taken down from their social media platforms.
The first season of Squid Game, a South Korean survival drama, became a global phenomenon after it debuted on Netflix in 2021.
Season two, which launched on December 26, 2024, has received mixed reactions. While opinions on the latest season vary, anticipation for the third and final chapter remains sky-high as fans are eager to see how the story concludes.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Squid Game Season Two
What We Know About Squid Game Season Three
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, has previously shed some light on his vision for the series. In an interview with Variety, he revealed that the last two seasons were initially written as “one long story arc.”
He explained:
“I was originally planning to write this story across a span of about eight to nine episodes, but once I finished the story, it came to over 10 episodes, which I thought was too long to contain in a single season.
“And so I wanted to have an adequate point where I could give closure as a second season and then move on with the third. And when you look at Gi-hun’s story, all of his attempts that he puts in to stop the game: the first one being getting these mercenaries and trying to plant a tracking device, that goes to fail; the second attempt of trying to persuade people to vote so that they can leave the game, that goes to fail as well; and then the third and last attempt of bringing people together and causing the rebellion, it also all goes to fail.”
This insight into the storyline has fans wondering: when will the series finally conclude?
When Is Season Three Coming?
Although Dong-hyuk has been careful not to reveal too much about the third season, he did offer a hint:
“But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
However, Netflix Korea seems to have let the cat out of the bag early. According to Comic Basics, the official Netflix Korea account accidentally uploaded a video to YouTube that revealed the release date for season three as June 27, 2025.
The video was quickly removed, but not before outlets like Comic Basics and The Hollywood Handle captured screenshots.
UNILAD reached out to Netflix for a comment, but no official response has been provided at this time.
A Teaser for Season Three
As fans await confirmation, Dong-hyuk has hinted at what’s to come in season three. Speaking to Variety, he shared:
“But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist?
“And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
Fans will have to wait and see if Netflix confirms the leaked release date. Until then, the countdown for the final chapter of Squid Game continues.
